SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara sophomore guard Orlando Johnson has been selected First Team All-District 9 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, it was announced Tuesday.
Johnson, the Big West Conference Player of the Year and Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player, will lead the Gauchos into the NCAA Tournament against Ohio State in Milwaukee on Friday.
"Orlando works so hard and this, and all of his other honors, are well deserved," said UCSB head coach Bob Williams. "He is a major part of our success this season."
A transfer from Loyola Marymount, Johnson enters the NCAA Tournament as UCSB's leading scorer at 17.9 points per game. He is also averaging 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 48.1% overall and 39.6% from 3-point range. Johnson is the first Gaucho since 1996-97 to score in double-figures in every game. In addition, the 6-foot-5 native of Seaside, Calif., has scored 20 or more points 10 times and he has two double-doubles.
Johnson is the fourth Gaucho in since 1993 to earn All-District honors. He joins Alex Harris (2007 and 2008) and Mark Hull (2003) on the list. He was joined on the first team by Matt Bouldin and Elias Harris of Gonzaga, Omar Samhan of St. Mary's, and Dior Lowhorn of San Francisco.
