UCSB Will Host Detroit On Bracket Buster Saturday
UC Santa Barbara will host the University of Detroit at 8:00 p.m. (PST) on Saturday, February 22 as part of Bracket Buster Saturday. The Gaucho-Titan game will not be televised on ESPN or ESPN2, but will be part of ESPN's Fullcourt package. UCSB is one of 18 mid-major schools taking part in the first Bracket Buster Saturday. The Gauchos were one of the nine pre-determined home teams, but their opponent was not known until Sunday, February 2. UCSB and Detroit will be meeting for the second time in as many years. Last year, the Gauchos beat the Titans at the Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, 86-59.

Time Change For February 27 Game Against LBSU
UC Santa Barbara's February 27 home game against Long Beach State, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., has been switched to 5:00 p.m. to accommodate television. The game will be carried live as part of the Big West Conference's Fox Sports Net 2 package. The UCSB-Long Beach State contest is one of three Gaucho appearances on Fox Sports Net 2 this year. Santa Barbara's January 30 game at UC Irvine and its February 20 game at Cal Poly will also be televised. Both of the road games begin at 5:30 p.m.

The Gaucho Record
UC Santa Barbara enters this week's Big West games with an overall record of 11-10 and a league mark of 8-3. The Gauchos are tied with Utah State for first-place in the Big West, a game ahead of UC Irvine. UCSB swept its two games over the weekend, defeating Utah State on Thursday night, 62-50, and then dropping Idaho on Saturday night, 52-44. With the two wins, the Gauchos have now won six of their last seven games to move into the first-place tie with the Aggies. The win over Utah State on Thursday avenged UCSB's worst loss of the season, a 75-59 decision at Logan on January 11. The victory over Idaho gives the Gauchos a regular season-sweep over the Vandals.

Defense Keys Gaucho Weekend Wins
UCSB's sweep of weekend games against Utah State and Idaho was due in large part to outstanding defense. In Thursday's win, the Gauchos limited the Aggies to 41.7% shooting from the field and just 50 points. In the second half of that game, Utah State scored just 22 points and shot just 34.8% from the field. On Saturday, UCSB held Idaho to a season-low 44 points and just 39.5% from the floor. In the second half, the Gaucho defense tightened even more, allowing the Vandals just 18 points on 24.0% shooting. In fact, trailing 42-37 with just over five minutes left, UCSB outscored Idaho 15-0 to comeback and put the game away.

The Williams File
Bob Williams is in his fifth season as the head coach at UC Santa Barbara. Last year, he guided the Gauchos to a 20-11 overall record and an 11-7 mark in Big West Conference play. It was the school's first 20-win season since 1992. Most importantly, however, Williams led UCSB to its first Big West Conference Tournament Championship ever and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 12 years. In his first four-plus seasons in Santa Barbara, Williams' teams have posted a 73-63 overall record and a 50-27 record in Big West games. In 1998-99, his first year, the Gauchos went 15-13 overall and 12-4 in the Big West, winning the league's Western Division championship. That year, they closed the campaign by going 15-5 and Williams was selected Big West Coach of the Year. Prior to his arrival at UCSB, he spent eight years at UC Davis and in those eight years, his teams recorded 20 or more wins five times and a 158-76 record. In each of his last four seasons, the Aggies advanced to the NCAA Tournament and in 1997-98, Williams' final season, they went 31-2, won the NCAA Division II National Championship and he was named NABC Division II Coach of the Year. Including two seasons at Menlo College, Williams has a record of 262-163 at four-year schools.

Skultety Out For The Season With Torn ACL
For the first couple weeks of practice, senior forward Bray Skultety was making a very strong bid for the starting nod at the five spot. Skultety emerged over the final 25 games last season, becoming one of the Gauchos' top rebounders and a sparkplug off the bench. He was a great story. In only his second year of organized basketball, Skultety, a walk-on, had become a regular on a team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Awarded a scholarship prior to this season, Skultety's story kept getting better and better, but on November 1, the tale took a turn for the worse. In practice that Friday, Skultety tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, ending his season and most likely his collegiate career. As a fifth-year senior, an injury redshirt year is a very remote possibility. In 2001-02, Skultety played in 26 games, starting one, averaging 2.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He easily led the team in rebounds per 40 minutes played at 16.2, and despite his 6-foot-6 height, he ranked second on the team in blocked shots with 13.

Defense Keys Gaucho Surge
The Gauchos' recent surge of six wins in seven games has propelled them into a tie with Utah State for first-place in the Big West Conference. In those seven games, UCSB has played some outstanding defense. The Gauchos have limited the opposition to 42.0% or less from the field in six of the seven games, all wins. In fact, four times in the last seven games, the opponents have shot below 40.0% from the field. In the last seven games, UCSB has held opponents to 40.0% shooting, but in the six wins, the figure is 38.6%. Over the weekend, in a pair of wins, UCSB limited Utah State and Idaho to 41.7% and 39.5% respectively, but the numbers were even more impressive in the second half of those games. On Thursday night, the Aggies hit 8-of-23 shots in the second half, 34.8%, and the Vandals hit just 6-of-25 from the field after halftime, 24.0%. Combined, UCSB's last two opponents made just 14-of-48 from the floor, 29.2%.

What's The Point?
The point is, when your opponents don't shoot the ball well, they don't score that many points. During the last seven games, the opposition has averaged just 55.4 points per game. UCSB has held five of the last seven opponents below 60 points and one of the teams that scored more than 20, Cal Poly, needed a game-ending three-point barrage to break the barrier. Going back a bit further, the Gauchos have limited 14 of the last 15 opponents to fewer than 70 points and eight of the last 15 under 60 points. In 21 games this season, UCSB opponents have been held under 70 points 17 times, under 60 points ten times, and under 50 three times. In the last two games, Utah State and Idaho combined for 94 points, an average of 47.0 per game. Idaho's 44-point total was a season-best for the UCSB defense. Overall, the Gauchos are allowing just 61.4 points per game and in 11 league contests, they have given-up an average of 56.5 per game. In fact, since allowing an average of 77.7 points per game in the first three games of the season, all at the BP Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, the Gauchos have held 18 opponents to an average of 58.7 points per game.

The Good Hands People
There are a number of reasons UCSB has turned things around this year. Obviously defense has been a big part of the turnaround, but another reason has been the Gauchos' ability to hold onto the ball. On the season, UCSB has committed 274 turnovers, an average of 13.0 per game, the second-lowest total in the Big West. In 11 league outings, the Gauchos have produced just 122 turnovers, a league-leading 11.1 per game. UCSB has had six games this season in which it has had fewer than ten turnovers, including each of the last three games and five of the last nine. In the last three, the Gauchos have turned the ball over just six, eight and nine times respectively, an average of 7.7 times per game.

Big Wins, Marginal Defeats
Of UCSB's three Big West Conference losses, only one has been by a large margin. On January 11, the Gauchos dropped a 16-point game, 75-59, at Utah State. The other two have come by narrow margins. The Gauchos dropped a 57-55 overtime loss to Cal State Fullerton on January 4 and then a 68-67 heartbreaker to Long Beach State on February 1. Santa Barbara's eight league wins have come by comfortable margins. The Gauchos have posted wins of 16, nine, 18, 15, nine, 16, 12 and eight points. The average margin of victory in Big West games has been 12.9 points and the average margin of defeat, including the 16-point loss at Utah State, has been 6.3 per game. In fact, of UCSB's nine wins this season, seven have come by margins of 15 points or more and the other two came by nine points. Overall, the Gauchos are outscoring their league opponents by a league-leading average of 7.6 points per game.

The Opposition
UCSB and Pacific have played 85 times in a series that dates back to 1947. The Tigers hold a narrow 43-42 edge all-time. The Gauchos won the first game between the teams this season, defeating Pacific at the Thunderdome on January 18 by a score of 67-52. Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge have played 23 times in a series that dates back to 1960. With their win at the Thunderdome on January 16, the Gauchos hold a 19-4 edge on the Matadors. Last year marked the first time that the teams met as Big West Conference opponents.

The Long And Winding Road
In recent weeks, UCSB has fattened-up a bit at the Thunderdome, winning five in a row. The Gauchos are now a solid 8-1 at home this season and, dating back to the end of the 2000-01 campaign, they have won 20 of their last 23 home games. All of that is fine and dandy, but UCSB must now take to the unfriendly road for a pair of games. Although the Gauchos have had little road success this year, their fortunes have gotten better recently. Santa Barbara has posted a 3-9 record in games away from the Thunderdome. Of that 3-9 mark, 1-4 of it has come on neutral courts and 2-5 of it has come in true road games. UCSB is 2-2 in Big West road games this season, winning at two of the tougher venues. On January 9, UCSB won at Idaho, 62-53, and on January 30 the Gauchos won at UC Irvine, 70-54.

Free At Last
For much of the season, UCSB struggled from the free throw line, but not recently. While the team is shooting 71.5% from the free throw line overall, they have improved to a league-leading 73.9% in 11 Big West games. In winning six of the last seven games, the Gauchos have made 76.0% from the line and in last weekend's sweep of Utah State and Idaho, UCSB hit 25-of-28 free throw attempts, a sparkling 89.3%.

Raising A Hull-A-Baloo
Senior forward Mark Hull scored seven points in Saturday's win over Idaho and in the process, he moved into second-place on UCSB's career scoring list with 1,440 points. In last weekend's two games, Hull passed 1992 Big West Player of the Year Lucius Davis and former Gaucho forward Doug Rex to move into the number two spot, trailing only guard Carrick DeHart who scored 1,687 in his four seasons. While he scored just 20 points in UCSB's wins over Utah State and Idaho, Hull remains the Gauchos' second-leading scorer at 13.8 points per game. In the two games, he nailed four three-point baskets, giving him 55 for the season and 202 for his career. The 55 threes he has made this season rank as the eighth-highest total in school history. The 78 he made last season rank second all-time. Hull has really been on a three-point roll lately. He has made a three-pointer in 13 straight games, and he has actually made at least two three-pointers in 12 of the last 13 games and 17 times in 21 games this season. He has made at least one three-pointer in 20 of 21 games. Hull, in fact, has made three or more three-pointers 13 times this year. He has hit a season-high five threes twice, once each against Bucknell and Cal State Fullerton. While Hull has been shooting the ball well from three-point range, he has struggled from two-point range over the last six games, going 3-for-17, 17.6%. With six rebounds in Saturday's win over Idaho, Hull has taken over the team-lead in rebounding at 5.1 per game. In addition, he has three assists in each of the last two games and three times in the last five.

Fulloving It
Since scoring just seven points in a January 11 loss at Utah State, junior guard Branduinn Fullove has been outstanding on the offensive end of the court. He has paced the Gauchos in scoring in each of the last four games and five out of six. Fullove scored 13 of UCSB's 52 points against Idaho on Saturday. In that game, he was the only Gaucho in double-figures, and he tallied ten of his points in the second half. In Thursday's win over Utah State, he had 21 points, including 16 in the second half and 13 of UCSB's final 15 points. Fullove's 21-point effort against the Aggies was his third straight 20-point game, a personal best. In the seven games since his seven-point total at Utah State, Fullove has scored 13 or more points and averaged 17.7 per game. He is now leading the team in scoring at 16.0 points per game, a figure that ranks him fifth in the Big West. In addition, Fullove's 34 points over the weekend give him 1,032 for his career. He became the 19th UCSB player in history to move past the 1,000 point mark and his 1,032 now place him in a tie for 17th all-time. He needs just 19 points to move into 16th-place all-time. Interestingly, unlike Hull who has done the majority of his damage from beyond the three-point arc, Fullove has been outstanding from inside the arc. In the last seven games, he has made 10-for-31 from three-point territory, 32.3%, but he has made an impressive 28-of-44, 63.6%, from inside the arc. Fullove is also at a high-water mark for rebounds this year. He is now averaging 3.4 per game and he has had six or more in four of the last seven games.

Keeping-Up With Jones
Junior guard Nick Jones remains UCSB's third-leading scorer at 12.5 points per game, but he has been in a bit of an offensive slump. In the two wins over the weekend, Jones averaged just 7.0 points per game in an average of 22.5 minutes per outing. He attempted just ten shots in the two games, going 4-for-10 overall and missing all five of his three-point attempts. While Jones is averaging 12.5 points per game overall, he has averaged 11.1 per game in Big West play and 10.1 per game in the last seven games. In the last seven, Jones has hit 8-of-22 shots from three-point range, 36.4%, but he has been outstanding from two-point range, hitting 14-of-23, 60.9%. While he has not made a three-pointer in two games, he does have 89 in his career, tying him for eighth all-time at UCSB. In addition to his offensive downturn, Jones played 24 minutes against Idaho on Saturday without grabbing a reboiund. It was his first game all year without a board and for the first time all season, he does not lead the Gauchos in rebounding. Jones is now averaging 4.9 rebounds per game overall, but in the last five games, he has managed just 2.4 per game, and while he has had five or more rebounds ten times this season, he has had fewer than five in six of the last seven games.

The Life Of Bryan
Junior forward Bryan Whitehead has really been a different player lately. In weekend wins over Utah State and Idaho, Whitehead played a total of 40 minutes, and while he averaged just 4.0 points in the two games, he averaged 9.0 rebounds per game. In the win over the Aggies, he pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds, five on the offensive end, in just 21 minutes. He followed-up his 11-rebound effort with seven more in 19 minutes against Idaho. In the past five games, four of which have been wins, Whitehead has averaged 5.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while making 11-of-16 shots from the field, 68.7%.

Atako Points The Way
Much of what junior point guard Jacoby Atako does to help UCSB win cannot be seen in his statistics. He is a pivotal reason that the Gauchos have stepped things up on the defensive end of the court. His pressure on the ball has been outstanding. In addition, during UCSB's recent run of six wins in seven games, Atako's numbers have been better. On the year, he is averaging 4.9 points, 3.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game. He has 72 assists and 39 turnovers. In the last seven games, Atako is averaging 6.1 points, 4.0 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. Also in the last seven, he has 28 assists and just 12 turnovers, a 2.3-to-1.0 ratio. Atako, who leads the team in steals with 21, has had at least one in each of the last three games and in the last seven, he has had eight. Finally, with 275 career assists, Atako now ranks eighth on UCSB's all-time list.

Help Cecil, Help!
After going scoreless in back-to-back games for the first time in his career, freshman guard Cecil Brown bounced back with a five-point outing against Idaho on Saturday. He enters the road trip this week averaging 5.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Brown has struggled with his offense in recent games, making just 1-of-8 shots, a three-pointer, in the last three games. His defense, however, has been another story. Brown is part of a backcourt threesome that has quickly developed into one of the Gauchos' best. He, along with fellow freshman Josh Davis, are teaming up to form one of the most potent defensive duos in the league. At times this season, Brown has also been a potent offensive force. He has three double-figure scoring games, going for a career-high 13 in just 15 minutes at Pepperdine, 12 in ten minutes against Weber State and 11 in 16 minutes against Cal State Northridge. While Brown has been without a rebond in the last two games, his career-high of six came in a January 18 win over Pacific.

Just Joshing
Freshman guard Josh Davis is averaging 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Davis, like Brown, is quickly emerging as one of the best defensive players on the UCSB roster. On the year, he is second on the team with 18 steals, a figure that ranks him ninth on the school's all-time freshman list. In 11 league games, Davis has a team-high 14 steals and in the last seven games, six of which were wins, he has had a team-best ten steals. Davis has had at least one steal in four straight games. He also has two or more in four of those games, going for a career-high of three at Idaho and against Pacific. Offensively, it has been a bit of a rollercoaster for Davis. He had a high of 14 points on January 2 against UC Riverside, making all five of his field goal attempts, but over the next five games he made just 2-of-17 shots from the floor. In the last five games, however, Davis has made 8-of-16 from the field, 50.0%.

What's Cooking?
Sophomore forward Casey Cook has been on an offensive rollercoaster this year as well. He has scored a total of nine points combined in the last four games. In the last five games, he has made just 5-of-26 shots from the field, 19.2%, and he has averaged 3.4 points per game. In the four previous games, he had averaged 9.9 points per game and made 13-of-17 shots from the field, 76.5%. In those four games, he scored in double-figures three times, the same number of double-figure efforts he had come up with in his previous 40 games. Cook is now ranked fourth on the team in scoring at 5.3 points per game and despite his recent shooting struggles, he is still shooting 44.1% from the floor. Cook has also improved his free throw percentage. In the last eight games, he has made 18-of-22 free throws, 81.8%, to improve his season percentage to 66.7%. Finally, in the last nine games, he has averaged 4.3 rebounds per game.

Oliver's Twist
Sophomore walk-on guard Chrismen Oliver continues to give UCSB solid minutes as the backup at the point. He is averaging 1.6 points and 1.6 assists per game overall, but in Big West games, he is scoring 1.9 points per game and passing off for 1.8 assists per game. Oliver has had a career-high five assists twice, once each at Cal on December 10, and against UC Riverside on January 2. Overall, he has three or more assists six times, four times in Big West play. The five points he scored against Idaho on Saturday were the most he had scored since January 11 at Utah State.

Ward Of The Court
Senior guard B.J. Ward did not get into last week's win over Utah State, his first DNP of the season. He played just one minute against Idaho. On the year, Ward is averaging 1.2 points per game. Since scoring a season-high seven on December 27 against Nebraska, he has scored just two points in 11 games.
