Brandon Payton Named Big West Men's Basketball Player Of The Week

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - UC Santa Barbara men's basketball player Brandon Payton has been named Big West Player of the Week for his performances in last weekend's Gaucho wins at Cal Poly and at home against Idaho.
In Thursday's 87-79 win at Cal Poly, Payton made 8-of-13 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and he scored a career-high 27 points. In addition, he grabbed a season-high five rebounds and hit a three-pointer with less than two minutes to go that broke a 74-74 tie and gave UCSB the lead for good. On Saturday, he hit 5-of-8 shots overall and his only three-point attempt, and scored 15 points.
In the two games combined, Payton averaged 21.0 points, made 13-of-21 shots from the floor (61.9%) and 4-of-5 from three-point range (80.0%). In addition, in the two contests, Payton made all 12 of his free throw attempts.
On the year, the junior from Oakland is now averaging 8.3 points overall and making 39.4% from the field. In eight Big West contests, he is averaging 11.5 points per game and shooting 42.5% from the field overall and 43.8% from beyond the three-point arc. Payton also leads the team in free throw shooting, making 82.9% overall and 85.2% in Big West games.
