SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara will travel to San Jose State for its Feb. 18 ESPN Bracket Buster game, it was announced Tuesday morning by ESPN in conjunction with the commissioners of six conferences. The tip-off time for the game is yet to be determined.
The Spartans, former long-time members of the Big West Conference, are currently 5-14 overall and 1-5 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Gauchos are 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the Big West Conference.
The game between UCSB and San Jose will mark the renewal of a series that dates back to 1939. The Gauchos and Spartans have played 100 times over the years, but have not met since the 1999-2000 season. San Jose, which holds a narrow 52-48 edge in the all-time series, left the Big West to join the WAC following the 1995-96 season. San Jose State will return the game at Santa Barbara in 2006-07.
None of the eight Big West schools will be involved in any of the made-for-TV games of programs from mid-major conferences. The other games involving league schools will be Eastern Washington at Cal State Fullerton, Drake at UC Irvine, Pacific hosting New Mexico State, Southeast Missouri State at UC Riverside, Cal Poly traveling to St. Mary's, Cal State Northridge at Boise State and Long Beach State at Manhattan.
