SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - March 5 will be a historic day of Basketball Rivalries on KCOY/CBS 12. CBS starts the day at 9am with a triple header of exciting play, Kansas vs. Missouri, A PAC 10 Wild Card Game and Villanova vs. Pittsburgh. Then at 5pm, the long time rivalry of Duke and North Carolina begins. The game will be immediately followed at 7pm by Cal Poly vs. UCSB at the Thunderdome.
It's the latest installment of the Blue-Green Rivalry, with a possible Big West Conference championship on the line. The game, which will mark the end of the regular season for both teams, will likely determine where each side will finish in the conference standings. With the Big West Conference tournament set to begin in Anaheim just three days later, both teams will be fighting for the best possible seeding heading into the postseason.
"This is a great opportunity for us to get great local exposure," said UCSB head coach Bob Williams. "Our games with Cal Poly are always exciting and having it televised just adds to the excitement."
The Gauchos are the defending Big West regular season and tournament champions, while the Mustangs are aiming for their first ever conference championship. With so much at stake, this is sure to be another exciting edition of what is always an exciting match-up.
The teams have a long history that dates back to 1947. In all, they have met 87 times, with UCSB holding a 56-31 advantage. The Gauchos have won six of the past ten meetings. The teams spilt the two-game series last season, with each side winning on its home court.
"We are so excited to bring this game to our viewers", said General Manager, Kevin Harlan. " KCOY CBS 12 is the premiere station for College Basketball, NCAA Tournament and the NCAA Championship game."
"The Blue-Green rivalry we have established with Cal Poly always produces exciting outcomes and we are pleased to showcase it live to our Central Coast fans who can't make it to The Thunderdome," said Tom Hastings, UCSB's Executive Associate Athletics Director. "We extend our thanks to KCOY and our generous sponsors for making it happen. It should be a great night of basketball."
Play by play for the game will be handled by KCOY Sports Director, Dave Alley, and Mitch Massey.
