SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's Jordan Weiner made a put-back as the buzzer sounded to end regulation, sending the Gauchos' game against visiting Fresno Pacific into overtime where they escaped with a 75-67 win on Friday afternoon.
The game-saving basket came after Orlando Johnson missed a three-point attempt with less than two seconds to play. Weiner caught the ball on one side of the basket and made a reverse lay-up scoop shot that barely beat the clock to tie the score at 62 apiece. UCSB (7-5) outscored the Sunbirds (10-4) in the overtime 13-5 to escape with the win.
"I saw Orlando release the ball and thought it might be short," Weiner said. "I just happened to be in the right place and didn't really have time to think about what to do. It was basically instinct. I knew I had to get a shot off fast."
Santa Barbara trailed by as many as six points with fewer than five minutes to play. When Matt Christman made a lay-up off an inbounds play with 1:59 left in regulation, Fresno Pacific still led by five, 62-57. James Nunnally, who struggled for much of the game but finished with a team-high 19 points, made a three-pointer with 1:41 remaining to pull the Gauchos within two, 62-60.
A Justin Joyner steal with 1:13 remaining gave UCSB a chance, but Jon Pastorek missed a shot with 1:08 to play and the Sunbirds got the rebound. Jordan Wild missed a three-point attempt on the other end and Johnson collected the rebound for the Gauchos with just over 30 seconds to play. A missed three by Weiner was rebounded by Wild who was fouled by Pastorek, but it was just UCSB's sixth foul and Fresno Pacific took the ball out of bounds.
With the Gauchos pressing, Pastorek intercepted the inbounds pass with 11 seconds left, setting the stage for Weiner's heroics.
The overtime was all Santa Barbara. Pastorek made a three-pointer to open the scoring and then, after a lay-up by Kendall Holmes cut the Gauchos' lead to 65-64, Nunnally made a three-pointer from deep in the corner while being fouled. He missed the free throw, but UCSB had its biggest lead since late in the first half, 68-64.
Deshaun LeGree, who scored a game-high 21 points, made one of two free throws with 3:40 to play to pull Fresno Pacific within 68-65. The Sunbirds never got any closer.
"We were lucky to get out of here with a win today," said UCSB head coach Bob Williams. "They (the Sunbirds) played well and really competed. I hope we can grow from this and I expect we will."
Center Greg Somogyi, who played a career-high 30 minutes because Jaimé Serna missed the game with a strained groin, scored a career-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. He also had seven rebounds, two blocked shots and a pair of steals. Johnson attempted just eight shots in 39 minute of action scoring 12 points. He added eight rebounds and a season-high seven assists. Pastorek had a season-high 10 points for UCSB.
Fresno Pacific lived and died by the three-point shot. The Sunbirds made 12-of-38, but missed their last nine, seven of them in the overtime.
