SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Alex Harris scored a career-high 32 points to rally UC Santa Barbara to a 73-65 victory over UC Riverside in the Big West Conference opening game for both teams.
Harris, who made 4-of-7 shots from the 3-point line, sank seven free throws in the final 2:17 to help the Gauchos (9-3) pull away from a 62-62 deadlock.
Justin Bell led Riverside (3-9) with 17 points, including 5-for-8 shooting from long range. One of his three pointers gave the Highlanders a 46-44 lead and his last one brought them to within 68-65 with 26.3 seconds left.
Dedrick Bates added 15 points and led Riverside with nine rebounds. Larry Cunningham added 14 points for the Highlanders.
