Santa Barbara, Calif. - Junior forward Adama Ndiaye scored 12 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds as the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the Concordia Cavaliers 72-65 at the Thunderdome Monday night. With the win UCSB improves to 2-5 on the season and Concordia falls to 5-4. Ten of Ndiaye's 16 rebounds were at the offensive end, falling one short of tying the school record. The Gauchos outrebounded the Cavaliers 55-35 on the evening.
UCSB senior Erick Ashe led all scorers with 19 points, including eight free throws in nine attempts. The Gauchos, who were playing without second leading scorer Juliano Jordani (sprained ankle), had only one other player in double figures scoring. Junior reserve LaRon Bryant finished with ten points in ten minutes of action, hitting three 3-pointers in five attempts.
Concordia cut the lead to two points at 67-65 with 34 seconds remaining on a driving layup by Ronald Patterson but was unable to come closer than that in the second half. The Cavaliers fouled Adama Ndiaye in the backcourt to send him to the free throw line with 30 seconds remaining in the game. Ndiaye hit both free throws to extend the Gaucho lead to four at 69-65. Concordia failed to convert on its next possession and was forced to foul B.J. Ward who hit one of his two free throws to extend UCSB's lead to five. An errant three point attempt by the Cavs and rebound by Ashe put the game away as Ashe made both of his free throws after he was fouled to make the final 72-65.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Gauchos were led by Ashe's 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Junior Adama Ndiaye grabbed eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes, leading the Gaucho advantage on the backboards 26-17. The Gauchos took a 40-34 lead into the lockerroom at halftime, after hitting six of their 14 shots (.429) from beyond the arc in the first stanza. Concordia shot 45.5% (15-for-33) from the floor in the first half, led by Vicente Harrison's 11 points and 3-for-3 shooting from three point land.
Concordia was lead by Vicente Harrison's 13 points and Alphonso Niles' 12 points and team-best 13 rebounds. Taron Pickett was the only other Cavalier in double figures with ten points.
UCSB will travel to San Diego next for a match-up with the San Diego State Aztecs this Wednesday, December 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Cox Arena.
