NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - Osiris Eldridge and Champ Oguchi each had 18 points to lead Illinois State to a 87-59 victory over UC Santa Barbara and the World Vision Invitational title on Sunday.
Dinma Odiakosa and Brandon Sampay both added 11 points for the undefeated Illinois State (7-0) Redbirds. Emmanuel Holloway had seven assists. Eldridge was named the invitational's most valuable player.
Jesse Byrd led UC-Santa Barbara with 17 points and eight rebounds. Paul Roemer had five assists and Chris Devine had nine points. Both teams had 11 turnovers on the game, but Illinois State turned UC Santa Barbara's mistakes into 11 points.
Illinois State led 42-26 going into the break. UC-Santa Barbara came back stronger in the second period, scoring 33 points, but it wasn't enough to out-do the Redbirds' 45 second half points.
UCSB played the end of the first half and all of the second half without its top player, Chris Devine, who sprained his left ankle near the end of the first 20 minute stanza. His status for the Gauchos' next game - Thursday, Dec. 4 at Utah Valley - was unknown.
Santa Barbara struggled with its shooting, making just 40.6%. Conversely, the Redbirds were on fire, making 62.5% for the game. One bright spot for the Gauchos was their turnover figure. The 11 turnovers were a season-low.
UCSB will also play its next game on the road, traveling to Utah Valley on Thursday, Dec. 4 for a 6:00 p.m. (PST) game.
