San Francisco. (AP) - John Cox scored 20 points in leading San Francisco past UC Santa Barbara 72-56 on Saturday.
Tyrone Riley added 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds as the Dons (1-1) handed coach Jesse Evans his first collegiate victory in the home opener. Josh Davis scored 20 points for the Gauchos (1-2), who lost on the road for the second time.
Jerome Gumbs and Andre Hazel each added 11 points for the Dons, who lost in overtime to Stanford at last week's Pete Newell Challenge.
The Gauchos trailed by 10-12 points for most of the second half until going on an 11-6 run to make it 59-54 with 3:52 remaining. Michael Chambers scored six of his eight points during the run, capped by a 3-pointer.
Hazel answered with a 3-pointer with 3:23 left to spark an 11-2 run for the final margin.
Gumbs scored six points of the Dons' first eight points to help build an 8-1 lead before Santa Barbara went on a 14-6 run to take their first lead 15-14 with 6:12 remaining in the first half.
Gumbs sent the Dons into the locker room with a 27-19 lead on a fadeaway jumper as time expired.
Santa Barbara was held scoreless for the first four minutes of the game. Chrisman Oliver sparked the Gauchos, scoring six of their first 15 points.
The Dons have a 2-1 record against UC Santa Barbara.
