Powell's Career-High Leads Gauchos Past Cal Poly Pomona

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) -Pomona native James Powell scored a career-high 24 points to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 75-56 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Thursday night.

The Gauchos (3-1) made 11-of-22 shots from the 3-point line, with Powell sinking 4-of-7, and shot 52.4 percent overall.

Larry Gordon led Pomona (0-1) with 22 points.

Powell scored eight points during an early, nine-minute spree in which UCSB made 7-of-8 3-pointers, taking a 28-15 lead. The margin grew to 39-22 by halftime.

The Gauchos' Nedim Pajevic had 11 points to go with team-high totals of eight rebounds and five assists. Chris Devine added 13 points for UCSB, which was playing without defending Big West Conference scoring champion Alex Harris (injured thumb).

Larry Gordon led Pomona (0-1) with 22 points.
