Nov. 1, 2001
Santa Barbara, Calif. -
Branduinn Fullove made 5-of-6 shots from three-point range, and scored 22 points, to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 94-57 exhibition victory over Korabel, a club team from the Ukraine, on Thursday night.
Overall, Fullove made 8-of-10 shots from the field, including all three of his three-point attempts in the first half, to lead an offense that shot 53.5% for the game. He also had six rebounds and three assists. Actually, the Gauchos struggled from the field in the first half, making just 15-of-36 shots (41.7%), but they hit their stride in the second half, going 23-of-35, an outstanding 65.7%.
Fullove's 22-points led the way, but several other UCSB players stood out. The Gauchos duo of 6-foot-9 senior post players, combined to score 30 points, pull down 18 rebounds, and block three shots. Vukovich had 17 points, and eight rebounds, while Ndiaye, making his first appearance after a redshirt year, had 13 points and ten boards.
Nick Jones, a starter for most of last season, came off the bench for UCSB in this one, but still played 26 minutes. Jones had a solid all-around game, posting 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Mark Hull, a second-team All-Big West selection last year, had 11 points.
Point guard Jacoby Atako, one of the most improved players on the team, struggled with his shooting (2-of-7 from the field, four points), but he had team-leading totals of seven assists and four steals.
Defensively, the Gauchos limited Korabel to just 29 points in the second half and a 40.7% mark from the field. The Ukrainians did drain 9-of-20 shots from three-point range, 45.0%.
At the final buzzer, UCSB, as a team, had piled up 25 assists and only 11 turnovers. Nine of the ten players who played for the Gauchos had at least one assist.
The Gauchos will play their final exhibition on Tuesday, November 6, when they host the EA Sports All-Stars, a team that features former UCSB guard Ray Kelly, a two-time All-Big West choice. The game will tipoff at 7:00 p.m. at the Thunderdome.
