Men's Basketball Falls Short To Long Beach State, 77-74

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Ron Johnson scored 18 points, including three free throws in the final 15 seconds, as Long Beach State beat UC Santa Barbara 77-74 on Thursday.

Jacoby Atako missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and a brief scuffle broke out as the game ended.

The 49ers (11-16, 9-6 Big West), who lost to the Gauchos by 32 points in January, erased a 12-point first-half deficit to win their third straight.

Johnson scored six points during a 14-0 Long Beach run that put the 49ers on top at 64-56 with 10:51 remaining.

UC Santa Santa Barbara (15-9, 9-6) battled back and took a 69-65 lead on Branduinn Fullove's 3-pointer with 3:23 remaining, but Cody Pearson hit two layups to push the 49ers back into front in the final minutes.

Travis Reed had 15 points and seven rebounds and Tony Darden added 13 points for the 49ers.

Fullove scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half as UC Santa Barbara took a 48-40 halftime lead. Mark Hull had 21 points and Nick Jones added 14 for the Gauchos.
