STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) - Freshman guard Cecil Brown scored a game-high 16 points Thursday night as UC Santa Barbara took first place in the Big West Conference with a 62-52 victory over Pacific at Spanos Center.
Nick Jones had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Gauchos, who improved to 12-10 and 9-3 in the Big West with their third consecutive win and seventh in eight games.
Miah Davis scored 13 points to lead Pacific, which fell to 11-9 and 6-5 in the Big West. The Tigers, who made just 35 percent of their field-goal attempts, scored the game's first basket and then never led again.
Santa Barbara assumed command with an 11-2 run midway through the second half that gave the Gauchos their biggest lead at 50-35. Brown had five of his 10 second-half points during that spurt.
The Gauchos built a 10-point lead three times in the first half and led 23-12 after a three-point play by Brown with eight minutes remaining.
Pacific then made five of its next six field-goal attempts and pulled within two points twice. But the Tigers, who trailed 29-25 at halftime, never would get any closer the rest of the way.
