SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - Brandon Payton scored 13 points and Derrick Allen added 12 points, six rebounds and five steals to lead UC Santa Barbara to an 81-53 win over Cal State Fullerton at Santa Barbara Thursday night.
The Gauchos never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 13-1 lead in the first three minutes. UCSB led 35-22 at the end of the first half on 16-for-33 (48.5%) shooting from the floor. Adama Ndiaye had three rejections in the first half to lead a defense that limited the Titans to 35.7% shooting from the field.
The Gauchos' suffocating defense did not let up in the second half as they held the Titans to just 31 points on 9-for-24 shooting (37.5%) and 36.5% total shooting on the night.
For the first time all season, the Gauchos had six players in double figures in points. LaRon Bryant saw limited time and was the last Gaucho to add double figures,
when he hit his third shot from behind the arc with 3:52 remaining in the game to give the Gauchos a 24 point lead. The largest lead for the Gauchos came with just over two minutes to play when Erick Ashe scored the final two of his ten points on a lay-up, to give UCSB a 32 point advantage. Ndiaye (10) and Mark Hull (10) were also in double-figures for Santa Barbara.
In addition to a balanced offensive attack, the Gauchos had balanced rebounding as well. Allen's six tied for team-high honors with Bell. Bell had a game-high eight assists and Ashe had seven. In all, UCSB set season-bests for assists (24), steals (13) and fewest turnovers (9).
Ike Harmon lead the Titans with 20 points on seven of 12 shooting, and 1-for-2 from three point range. Josh Fischer pulled down seven rebound to lead Fullerton in that category.
With the victory, UCSB has its first three-game winning streak of the season and they have now won five out of six, all in Big West play. The Gauchos are now 9-11 overall and 5-4 in league. Cal State Fullerton has lost four in a row and they drop to 8-12 overall and 3-6 in the Big West.
UCSB returns to action on Saturday when they host UC Irvine in a 7:00 p.m. game at the Thunderdome. That game will be UCSB Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame Night as ten new inductees to the Hall of Fame will be introduced at halftime. In addition, it will be "Bring A Kid To The Game Night" and each adult who purchases a ticket will receive one for a kid free.
