Men's Basketball Falls To Utah State, 72-64

LOGAN, Utah (AP) - Tony Brown scored 27 points and Desmond Penigar tallied 16 of his 18 points in the second half to lead Utah State to a 72-64 victory over UC Santa Barbara Thursday night.
Brown went 8-of-16 from the floor, 4-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line to equal his career-high for the Aggies (7-3 in the Big West, 15-4 overall).
Brown, who added seven assists and four steals without committing a turnover, also scored 27 points at New Mexico State on Feb. 24, 2000.
Utah State trailed 31-30 at halftime, but Penigar, the Aggies' leading scorer at 17.7 points per game, scored seven points in the first four minutes of the second half to help USU build a 40-35 advantage.
A 7-2 spurt by the Aggies capped by a 3-point play from Brown extended USU's lead to 54-44 with 7:36 to play, and UC Santa Barbara never got closer than five points the remainder of the game.
Utah State went 9-for-12 from the free-throw line in the final 2:17 to keep the Gauchos at bay.
The Aggies are 5-2 when trailing at halftime this season and have won five straight against the Gauchos.
Brown moved past Jeff Anderson and into 11th place on USU's all-time scoring list. He has scored 1,424 points during his Aggie career.
Utah State's Brennan Ray set a new career-high with 10 rebounds.
