SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the St. Mary's College Gaels 68-57 Saturday evening as senior guard Erick Ashe led a group of four double-digit scores for the Gauchos with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Adama Ndiaye scored thirteen points and grabbed a game-high thirteen rebounds for UCSB, who upped their record to 4-7 on the season, and are now winners of two in a row. St. Mary's, who was without the services of senior Brad Millard (suspended), fell to 5-8 on the season.
The Gauchos led 25-20 at halftime behind Ndiaye's eight points and ten rebounds. Brandon Payton had seven points at the break for UCSB, who held the visiting Gaels to 21.7% shooting from the floor in the first 20 minutes. The Gauchos took a ten point lead at 40-30 with 15:10 remaining when Ndiaye scored on a layup, and LaRon Bryant stretched it to thirteen moments later when he hit one of his three treys on the evening. Juliano Jordani drained a three-pointer of his own from the top of the key with 4:58 remaining in the game to give the Gauchos a 14 point lead at 59-45, their biggest margin in the game. That seemed to ice the game for UCSB, as the Gauchos were able to cruise to victory from that point on.
LaRon Bryant and Payton rounded out the UCSB double-digit scorers with eleven points apiece. Seniors Derrick Allen and Larry Bell each finished with five assists for the Gauchos. UCSB shot 43.9% from the floor for the game and 53.6% in the second half. The Gaels shot only 29.1% from the floor for the game. Frank Allocco led St. Mary's with 14 points and Ross Benson had a team-best ten rebounds.
The Gauchos will look to stretch their unbeaten-in-the-millennium streak to three when they travel to Denton, Texas to open Big West Conference play on Thursday against North Texas.
