LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Louis Darby's off-balance 25-footer at the buzzer gave Long Beach State a 63-62 victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday night.
The 49ers (3-7, 1-0 Big West Conference) outscored the Gauchos 23-4 over the final 10:36 of the game and held UC Santa Barbara scoreless for eight minutes and 24 seconds.
Trailing 58-40 with 10:36 left, the 49ers went on an 18-0 run and tied the game at 58-58 when Darby made one of two free throws.
Jacoby Atako's layup gave UC Santa Barbara (6-4) a 62-60 lead with 30 seconds left.
Long Beach State inbounded the ball but had difficulty getting a shot off as the clock winded down.
Darby lost control of the ball near midcourt with three-seconds remaining, but regained control and drove toward the 49ers basket before launching the game-winner as time expired. Darby finished with a career-high 17 points.
Roberts led Long Beach State with 18 points and five rebounds.
Antoine Jackson sparked the 49ers second half comeback as he made four of four shots while scoring all 10 of his points in the second half. UC Santa Barbara out-rebounded the 49ers 40-22.
Casey Cook led the Gauchos, who were playing their first game in 13 days, with 15 points.
