Wheeler came to Santa Barbara after spending one season as an assistant coach at Pepperdine University.
Wheeler's duties include recruiting, working with the Gaucho inside players, on-the-court coaching, scouting and working with the players on academic matters. Before his season at Pepperdine, Wheeler spent three seasons as an assistant to Bob Williams at the University of California at Davis and three seasons as an assistant at the University of California at Berkeley.
"Jon is a fine young coach," said Coach Williams. "He did an outstanding job when he was my assistant coach at Davis and he is doing an outstanding job as my assistant at UC Santa Barbara. I am very pleased to have him as part of my staff."
Wheeler began his coaching days after a career as a player at Cal and St. Mary's. He spent his first two seasons as a collegiate player, 1982-83 and 1983-84 at St. Mary's College before transferring to Cal for his final two campaigns, 1985-86 and 1986-87. In 1983-84 he was a member of the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team. In 1984-85, as a redshirt, he was named Cal's Most Inspirational Player and following his senior season in 1986-87, he was named the Bears' Most Improved Player.
The 35-year old Wheeler is married (Jynane) and resides in Santa Barbara.
