John Green is ready to play basketball for UC Santa Barbara and he has been for more than two years.
Green did play for the Gauchos as a freshman in 2011-12…briefly.
After an outstanding showing in an exhibition win over San Francisco State in which he scored 17 points and had nine rebounds, Green was prepared to become part of the team's regular rotation. A week later, in the regular season opener against Chapman, he logged 14 minutes in relief of Orlando Johnson and James Nunnally, scoring five points and passing off for two assists.
But in the waning minutes of the game against Chapman, Green turned to run up court and felt a sharp pain in his foot. It was a pain he had experience before, only in the other foot. He knew right away that he'd broken a bone. He sat out the remainder of the season.
During the summer of 2012, as he prepared for the delayed start to his career, Green broke the same bone in the same foot that he had broken in the game against Chapman. He missed all of last season too.
Now, Green is healthy again. One of the team's best and most versatile players, he is expected to play an ever-increasing key role for the Gauchos in 2013-14, seeing time at both wing positions as well as power forward.
Green and the rest of the UCSB men's basketball team will tip-off the 2013-14 season on Sunday, Nov. 3 when they host Cal State East Bay in an exhibition game that will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. in the Thunderdome.
Great season ticket packages are available for the Gauchos. The non-conference schedule includes Cal, which will be making its first appearance in Santa Barbara since it helped christen the Thunderdome in 1979, as well as old rival Utah State and 2013 NCAA Tournament participant South Dakota State.
