After making three out of four shots and jumping out to a 7-0 lead to start the game Thursday, UC Santa Barbara went colder than the slab of hockey ice under the basketball floor at Honda Center and the result was a resounding 69-38 loss to Cal Poly in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament.

UC Santa Barbara’s Alan Williams has added another honor to his list of accomplishments. On Monday Williams, a junior, was named to the prestigious United States Basketball Writers Association All-District IX Team. UC Santa Barbara enters Sunday's game at San Diego with a 4-3 overall record. The Gauchos won their last game, a 75-68 decision over Cal on Dec. 6. Overall, they have won two of their last three games with the only loss coming at nationally ranked UCLA on Dec. 3. UCSB's other significant win this season came on Nov. 12 at UNLV when it pounded the Runnin' Rebels, 86-65. The Gauchos other losses came to Utah State (71-64) and at Colorado (76-68). They played both of those games without leading scorer and rebounder Alan Williams.

Minutes before its game against visiting Utah State on Saturday night, UC Santa Barbara leading scorer and rebounder Alan Williams suffered upper-back spasms during warm-ups and was scratched from the starting lineup. The result was a 71-64 Aggie victory, but it didn't come easy.

This week was lightheartedly referred to as “Throwback Week” for the UCSB men’s basketball team because of a schedule that included former Big West/Pacific Coast Athletic Association rivals UNLV and Utah State. Well, lighthearted or not, “Throwback Week” got off to a good start as the Gauchos travelled to Las Vegas and handed the Runnin’ Rebels their worst home loss in 10 years, 86-65, on Tuesday night. On Saturday, UCSB returns home to host the second game of its walk down memory lane when Utah State invades the Thunderdome for a 7:00 p.m. game.

UCSB to Rekindle Old Friendships: Play at UNLV Tuesday, Host Utah State Saturday
This week will be “Blast From The Past Week” for the UCSB men’s basketball team. To commemorate the throwback week, the Gauchos will wear really tight shorts and Converse Chuck Taylors, just like color announcer Don Ford did back in the day. Actually, the week will be a trip down memory lane for many UCSB basketball fans, but the current players will not actually be subjected to the tight shorts and canvas shoes. The Gauchos will be playing a pair of games against old-time Big West opponents, both of which are now in the Mountain West Conference. First, they will travel to UNLV to play the Runnin’ Rebels on Tuesday night. The Rebels are more than a bit player when it comes to some of the most memorable moments in UCSB basketball history. In fact, the Gauchos were UNLV’s final defeat before its march to the 1990 NCAA Championship. On Nov. 16, the Gauchos will host another former nemesis from back in the Big West/Pacific Coast Athletic Association days, Utah State. The two old foes will also battle in Logan, Utah on Dec. 20.

Countdown to Tipoff: Kyle Boswell
Make no mistake about it Kyle Boswell can shoot the basketball. If there were any questions about Boswell's ability to shoot, they were conclusively answered during his junior year in 2012-13 when he made 78 three-point baskets, the third most by a Gaucho in a single season. Boswell shot 41.9% from outside the three-point arc and set a career-high with he made seven in one game against nationally ranked San Diego State.
