Bryson's Record Performance Leads Stirring Comeback but Gauchos Lose Thriller to Pacific, 71-68
Freshman Michael Bryson scored a career-high 29 points and UC Santa Barbara used a barrage of three-point baskets to forge a stirring comeback, turning a 38-19 first half deficit into a second half lead, but the Gauchos ultimately fell short in a 71-68 loss to the University of the Pacific in the first round of the 2013 Big West Tournament at Honda Center.

The only question was whether the return of Kyle Boswell and Keegan Hornbuckle would be enough. Almost, but not quite, as the Rainbow Warriors hung on to edge the Gauchos, 70-66.

UCSB enters Thursday night's game at Hawai'i with a one-half game lead over Cal State Northridge in the race for the final Big West Tournament berth. The Gauchos are one-game ahead of the Matadors in the loss column with a 4-10 record. Northridge, which has a 4-11 record, will host Cal Poly on Thursday. The two teams will meet on Saturday night in the San Fernando Valley in a game that could determine the eighth team in the conference tournament.

In their first eight games, they have gone 4-4 with wins over Utah State, San Jose State, Fresno State and Montana State and losses to Detroit, Eastern Washington, Utah State and Boise State.

UCSB enters Saturday's game at Cal Poly with an overall record of 8-15 and a Big West Conference mark of 4-8. The Gauchos ended a five-game losing streak on Saturday, Feb. 9 when they beat Pacific, 66-53. The five-game losing streak was the longest suffered by a UCSB team since December of 2002.

UC Santa Barbara’s Jan. 26 game against the University of Hawai’i has been moved from 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to accommodate Fox Sports Prime Ticket, which will televise from the Thunderdome for the third time over a four-week span. UC Santa Barbara shot just 38.5% from the field and trailed Cal Poly by five points at halftime of Saturday’s renewal of the Blue-Green Rivalry and that was the good news. The Gauchos (7-10 overall, 3-3 in the Big West) survived an 83-81 double overtime thriller over their Blue-Green Rival Cal Poly (7-9 overall, 3-3 in the Big West) despite losing sophomore Alan Williams, their leading scorer and rebounder, to a left leg injury with just over six minutes to play in the first half when he landed hard after committing a foul while contesting a Mustang shot.

The game will be the Gauchos’ final preseason home game of the year. They will host an ESPNU BracketBuster game on Feb. 23, but Saturday’s game will be the last prior to conference play. Illinois State used a 21-0 run midway through the first half to transform a 6-6 tie into a 27-6 lead over UC Santa Barbara and then the Redbirds coasted to a 100-72 win in Normal, Ill., Monday night.

UCSB Can't Overcome Turnovers, Loses Season Opener at LSU, 77-63
UC Santa Barbara entered its season-opening game at LSU on Friday night as the nation’s third youngest team. The Gauchos travel roster of 13 includes seven freshmen and three sophomores. Against the Tigers, there were times when UCSB acted its age, but there were numerous bright spots in the road loss.

UCSB will go from tangling with Leopards in an exhibition game to battling Tigers in the regular season opener. The Gauchos travel to Baton Rouge, La., for a first-ever meeting with Louisiana State on Friday, Nov. 9.

UCSB Athletics Ticket Office is excited to announce the distribution of basketball season tickets this week. The Gauchos recently announced a two-year celebration of 35 years in the Thunderdome with a special commemorative season ticket. This year past players from the venue's storied history will be featured on each season ticket.

The annual Big West Conference Preseason Media Poll was released Thursday and the UC Santa Barbara men’s basketball team has been picked to finish in fifth-place. The reigning Big West champion Long Beach State was selected as the favorites to repeat as 2012-13 champions.
