UCSB's Inside Job Does In UC Davis, 86-59
DAVIS, Calif. – Orlando Johnson scored 21 and Jaimé Serna made 9-of-10 shots and had 18 points as visiting UC Santa Barbara cruised past UC Davis 86-59 on Thursday night. The loss was the 15th in a row for the Aggies (1-18 overall, 0-7 in the Big West).
Tyler Les, who finished with a team-high 16 points, made a pair of early three-point baskets to give Davis a 6-4 edge but a three-pointer by Johnson gave the Gauchos (10-7 overall, 5-2 in the Big West) a 7-6 lead that they never relinquished. Johnson scored 14 of his points in the first half and Serna added 10 as UCSB built a 48-29 lead at the break.
The second half was much of the same as the Gauchos outscored the Aggies 25-12 in the first 9:40, pushing the lead to 32 points, 73-41, when Johnson made a free throw line jumper with 10:20 remaining in the game. The lead never dropped below 27 the rest of the way.
Freshman Alan Williams scored a career-high and had the second double-double of his career with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He also tied the school's record for blocked shots by a freshman with five, a record he and Greg Somogyi already shared.
"It was important for us to establish ourselves inside tonight," said UCSB head coach Bob Williams. "They (the Aggies) are small and our greatest advantage was inside the paint. Jaimé, Alan and Greg (Somogyi) really responded tonight and made things open up for everyone."
Led by their post trio, the Gauchos had a 42-18 scoring advantage in the paint and a 20-0 advantage in second chance points.
UCSB shot 54.7% for the game, including 59.4% in the first half. Davis was held to 37.5%, including a dismal 32.3% in the decisive first half. The Gauchos also had a monstrous 45-23 rebounding advantage over the much shorter Aggies. Johnson added a game-high six assists to go with his 21 points.
Eddie Miller and Tyrell Corbin were both in double-figures for Davis with 13 and 11 points respectively.
