SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In early October, UC Santa Barbara senior Orlando Johnson was named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-50 list. He was the first Gaucho ever to make the list and one of a very small handful of Big West Conference players to make the list.
On Tuesday, Johnson migrated into even more select territory as he was included on the Los Angeles Athletic Club's John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top-25 List. Johnson becomes the first Gaucho and first Big West player since Larry Johnson (1990-91) to play his way onto the Wooden Award top-25 list.
"O.J. is so deserving of being on the list," said UCSB head coach Bob Williams. "He works so hard and is such a special player and him being on the list recognizes that."
Johnson currently leads the Gauchos in scoring (20.4 per game), rebounding (6.8 per game) and assists (2.9 per game). He also leads the team in steals (16) and could become the first player to lead the program in scoring, rebounding and assists since Brian Shaw in 1987-88.
Johnson and his UCSB teammates play a pair of games at home this week. On Thursday, the Gauchos host Cal State Northridge in a 7:00 p.m. game at the Thunderdome.
On Saturday, Jan. 21, Santa Barbara hosts Long Beach State. The Gauchos and 49ers have met in the last two Big West Championship games. The Saturday game at the Thunderdome will tip-off at 8:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
