SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Former head coach Jerry Pimm was introduced as the latest "Legend of the 'Dome" at halftime of Wednesday night's UCSB-UNLV game at the Thunderdome. A banner honoring Coach Pimm was unveiled on the northeast wall of the 'Dome.
Pimm came to UCSB from the University of Utah where he had achieved great success. He inherited a Gaucho basketball program that had recorded 10 straight losing seasons and immediately set it on a path that culminated in national rankings and postseason bids. Quite simply, he coached the teams that transformed the Campus Events Center into the Thunderdome.
"This is a great honor," Pimm told a packed house. "This honor belongs to the players, my coaches, the administrators and the students who made this such a great place for college basketball."
In 1988, Pimm guided UCSB to an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was the program's first NCAA Tournament berth ever. The next season, he led the Gauchos to a school record 11-game winning streak and in 1990, he coached his team to its second NCAA Tournament bid and a victory in the first round.
In all, Pimm led Santa Barbara to a school record 222 wins. His teams also advanced to five postseason tournaments and posted numerous wins over nationally-ranked opponents, including UNLV when it verged on the No. 1 national ranking twice and North Carolina State when it was ranked 5th.
Additionally, Pimm coached the other three men's basketball representatives in the Legends of the 'Dome program, Brian Shaw, Carrick DeHart and Eric McArthur.
The next Legend banner will be unfurled on Feb. 4, 2012 when the UCSB women's team plays Cal Poly. Former Gaucho great Erin Alexander will be on-hand to view her banner for the first time.
