Annual Gaucho Downtown Basketball Huddle Set for Oct. 27

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's annual Downtown Basketball Huddle has been set for Thursday, Oct. 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Cabrillo Arts Pavillion near East Brach in Santa Barbara.

All Gaucho basketball supporters are invited to attend the luncheon, which will also serve as a media preview.  UCSB coaches and student-athletes will be on hand to take questions from the media and supporters.

The Gaucho women's team will be up first.  New head coach Carlene Mitchell will talk about her team and its prospects for the 2011-12 season.  Last year, UCSB tied for the Big West Conference's regular season crown and this year's version will return several players.

Three of the key women's basketball returnees – Emilie Johnson, Sweets Underwood and Nicole Nesbit - are expected to be at the luncheon.

Bob Williams, who enters the 2011-12 men's season needing just six wins to become UCSB's all-time winningest head coach, will talk about his team's chances for a third straight NCAA Tournament bid.  The two-time defending Big West champions will return most of their key players from last year, including John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-50 honoree and two-time Big West Tournament MVP Orlando Johnson.

Johnson, along with James Nunnally and point guard Nate Garth, a transfer from New Mexico, are expected to take part in the luncheon.

In addition to enjoying a light lunch and listening to Gaucho coaches and players, the 2012 Legends of the 'Dome will be announced to the public for the first time.
