The 1983 UC Santa Barbara baseball team, which won the Southern California Baseball Association title and came within one victory of advancing to the College Baseball World Series, will be honored at the Gauchos' annual Alumni Game on January 25, 2003 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
"The 1983 team was a very special group," said current UCSB head coach Bob Brontsema, the starting second baseman on the team. "That team was special on and off the field and it will be nice to have it back together."
The 1983 team won 44 games, a school record at the time, and advanced to the NCAA West Regional. In fact, they won 25 of their final 28 games that season and earned a reputation as a come-from-behind, never-give-up team. The 1983 Gauchos won two games at the Regional in Palo Alto before losing to the eventual National Champion, Stanford.
The schedule for the January 25 event will include an Old Timers game, home run hitting contest, traditional Alumni Game, a tri-tip barbecue and a UCSB men's basketball game aganst Cal Poly later that evening. The schedule is as follows:
January 25, 2002 10:00 a.m. - Old Timers Game - 1965-85 graduates. 12:00 p.m. - Home Run Hitting Contest. 1:30 p.m. - Tradional Alumni Game - Almuni vs. 2003 Gauchos. 3:30 p.m. (approximately) - Tri-Tip Barbecue 7:00 p.m. - Attend UCSB-Cal Poly men's basketball game at the Thunderdome
For all baseball alums, the cost of the entire event is $45.00. Additional barbecue tickets can be purchased for $10.00. All former Gauchos interested must make checks payable to UC Regents/UCSB Baseball, and mail them to:
