SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - For the fourth season in a row, UC Santa Barbara's baseball team has been mentioned as one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, courtesy of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
The Gauchos come in as the 61st best recruiting class as ranked by the publication, yet another strong indication of a successful upcoming 2011 season.
Right-hander Jesse Meaux, who turned down an opportunity to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies after being drafted in June, also returns to anchor the pitching staff. Lefty Kevin Gelinas, who has been drafted two straight years, right-hander Greg Davis and starters Nick Capito and Nick Loredo also return.
"We are excited about the group of athletes that have arrived at UCSB," said Associate Head Coach Tom Myers, who also serves as UCSB's recruiting coordinator. "Their hard work and skill set should make our program compete for a Big West title for years to come."
The Gauchos open their season with a three-game homestand on Friday, Feb. 18 vs. LaSalle University and also host such teams as Nevada, USC, Sacramento State, Pepperdine and Big West foes Long Beach State and UC Irvine at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
UCSB will also travel to face Washington State, Oregon State, Rice, Cal and Cal State Fullerton.
