UCSB Baseball Summer Update: Malec Tearing Up Cape Cod League
July 10, 2003
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara junior-to-be Chris Malec is enjoying his summer vacation on the East Coast, currently ranking among the Cape Cod League leaders in a number of offensive categories as a member of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
As of July 11, the second baseman from Laguna Niguel, Calif., tops all league players with a .375 bating average and .528 slugging percentage. In addition, Malec ranks second in both hits (27) and on-base percentage (.447), while his RBI total of 11 is tied for fifth-best.
A day after hitting for the cycle in a June 29 victory over Chatham, Malec was named the Cape Cod League Player of the Week. He is a likely candidate to represent the Eastern Division-leading Red Sox (14-9) in the CCBL All-Star Game, held July 26 in Fallmouth, Mass.
Since 1885, the Cape Cod Baseball League has been the nation's premiere summer amateur baseball organization. Major League players such as Nomar Garciaparra, Darren Erstad and Jason Varitek have all cut their teeth in the CCBL, which saw 146 of its former athletes selected in last month's MLB First Year Player Draft.
