Gauchos Continue to Hone Skills Over Summer
June 26, 2006
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
After completing the 2006 campaign, senior returnees Mario Lewis, Jeff Braun and Justin Aspegren elected to stay in Santa Barbara to play summer ball for the Santa Barbara Foresters. Lewis, the Gauchos' everyday right fielder last year, is back for his second stint as a Forester this summer. The left-handed Braun made his first start for the Foresters this past week in the Maxim Best of the West Tournament, dealing seven innings and giving up three runs (none earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out four en route to his first victory on the summer. Aspegren has appeared in four games this summer thus far for the Foresters, including one start in the Maxim Tournament. Over his ten innings pitched, the Napa, Calif. native has surrendered no runs on five hits and two walks while fanning an impressive twelve batters and holding opponents to a .139 batting average against. In his one start, Aspegren tossed six scoreless innings, giving up five hits and no walks while striking out six to earn his first win of the season. Fellow senior reliever Justin Segal is also finding innings this summer, his coming off the rubber for the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League. Segal, who was the Gaucho closer last season, has amassed a 1-0 record for the A's in three appearances and 3.1 IP, surrendering two hits and two walks while striking out two batters. After leading the team in games finished for the Gauchos in 2006, the submariner is doing much of the same for Chatham with two games finished on the year.
Seniors Robbie Blauer and Matt Anderson, junior infielder Patrick Rose and sophomore infielder Shane Carlson all managed to stay together this summer, finding time on the Oahu Paddlers of the Hawaiian Collegiate Baseball League. Sophomores Chris McMurray and Anthony Martin will also practice their skills in Hawaii's paradise, as each landed a spot on the Kauai Menehunes and Waikiki Surfers, respectively.
Sophomore Matt Wade has only appeared on one occasion for the Front Royal Cardinals of the Valley League, but in his two-thirds inning of work, the right-hander faced only one batter and induced a double play. Fellow sophomores Brian Gump and Austin Hogans along with freshmen Alex Graham and Pat Scardino all stayed together to hone their skills playing for the Monterey Bay Sox of the California Collegiate League. The Bay Sox and the Foresters (who are also in the CCL) will face off on July 8 and 9 (double header) in Monterey, Calif. at 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. and also on July 15 and 16 (double header) at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium at 5:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. Sophomore right-hander Clayton Edwards has yet to be used on the hill for the Palm Springs Power of the Pacific Southwest Baseball League, but he is expected to get a shot at the closer position for the Power as the season progresses.
Freshman backstop Cody Dee and RHP Blair Brejtfus will work together this summer, both landing a spot on the roster for Rockville Express of the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League. Dee has found limited playing time, tallying one hit in six at-bats for Rockville thus far this summer. With the season still young, Brejtfus has not made an appearance for Rockville this summer. Fellow freshman Steve Domecus, a catcher, will play his summer ball for the Solano Steelheads.
Future Gaucho Chris Fox, a junior transfer from El Camino Junior College, has found time on the Alaska Goldpanners of the Alaska Baseball League. In two games played, Fox is batting .600 (6-10) with four runs scored and two RBI. At El Camino Junior College, the South Coast All-Conference outfielder led his team in nearly every offensive category: Batting average (.368), doubles (12), runs scored (42), hits (53), RBI (30), triples (3), home runs (4), walks (21) and stolen bases (26).
