SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A pair of former UC Santa Barbara baseball players are making moves in the profession ranks.
2003 Gaucho alum Sean Thompson was recently named to the Midwest League Eastern Division All-Star team as a member of the Fort Wayne Wizzards. Fort Wayne is the Single-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. In 11 starts this season, Thompson is 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA and 57 strikeouts.
Meanwhile 2004 graduate Aaron Jones has recently signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Cubs, and will report to the Mesa Cubs of the Arizona Rookie League. Jones, a middle reliever, becomes the fourth member of the 2004 Gauchos to sign professionally, joining Greg Powers, Ivan Ramirez and Nate Sutton. Last season the Torrance, Calif., native struck out 15 batters in 22.2 innings pitched, posting a 7.15 ERA.
