June 19, 2002

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Gaucho outfielder/designated hitter Matt Wilkerson was named to Baseball America's All-Freshman Team on Tuesday. The freshman from Trabuco Hills Calif., was named All Freshman Second Team as a designated hitter.

Wilkerson, a 6-4 freshman out of Trabuco Hills, Calif., batted .312, hitting 16 home runs, scoring 49 runs to go with 49 RBI. His 16 home runs is a new Big West Conference record for a freshman, surpassing the previous mark of 14, formerly held by the San Diego Padres Phil Nevin. The 16 home run total is also third all-time at UCSB.

The All-Freshman recognition is Wilkerson's second such achievement, as he was one of three Gaucho freshman, that included right-hand pitcher Eric Posthumus, and Santa Margarita High teammate, second baseman Chris Malec, that were named to Collegiate Baseball's All-Freshman team.
