SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Josh Fulton, starting shortstop for the UC Santa Barbara baseball team in 2003, signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
Fulton, a native of Olympia, Wash., will begin his professional career in Florida with the Bradenton Pirates of the Gulf Coast League (Class-A).
As a senior last season Fulton hit .318 - third-highest amongst all Gauchos - with one home run and 19 runs batted in. After transferring from Washington prior to the 2002 campaign, he appeared in 28 games and hit .276 (8-for-29) as a junior at UCSB.
The 5'10", 185-pound Fulton is the fourth Santa Barbara player to sign with a Major League team this spring. Pitchers Matt Vasquez and Sean Thompson and catcher Chad Ziemendorf were all selected in last week's Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
