Baseball's Matt Vasquez Selected By Detroit Tigers In Major League Baseball Draft

UC Santa Barbara junior right handed pitcher Matt Vasquez has been selected by the Detroit Tigers in the seventh round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft, it was announced today.
Vasquez, who was drafted by the Texas Rangers out of Santa Barbara High School in 2000, was the 190th pick in this year's draft.
As a junior, the 6-foot-3 hurler posted a 4-4 record for the Gauchos, recording a 5.11 ERA and striking out 71 batters in 93.1 innings of work. Vasquez actually experienced his best season at UCSB in 2001, his freshman year. That year, he was 5-4 with a 3.95 ERA and he was an important cog in a Gaucho team that went 40-17 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In his career, Vasquez posted 14 wins and recorded 189 strikeouts, the eighth highest total in school history.
