Four Baseball Players Named To 2002 All-Big West Teams

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Four Gauchos, led by Chris Malec, were selected All-Big West, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Freshman second baseman Chris Malec, (.328, 17 doubles, 60 RBI, eight home runs, 41 runs, 75 hits)was the lone Gaucho selected to the second team. The Laguna Niguel, Calif. Native put up some of the best numbers ever by a freshman in the Big West in RBI (2nd), Hit-by-pitches (5th) and doubles (5th). His 15 hit-by-pitches is second all-time in a season at UCSB.

Malec's former high school teammate and fellow freshman, utility, Matt Wilkerson (.312, Big West freshman home run record 16 home runs, 49 runs, 49 RBI, 10 doubles, seven stolen bases), senior shortstop Dave Licht (.321, 62 hits, 10 doubles, 42 runs, eight stolen bases, 29 walks) and junior right fielder Ryan Spilborghs (.338, 14 home runs, 59 RBI, 57 runs, 74 hits, five triples, 38 walks) were named honorable mention.
