Michael Martin came within one out of pitching a complete game as he led UCSB to a 6-2 win over ninth-ranked UC Irvine last Friday at Anteater Field.
Martin, a senior right-hander, got the starting nod in place of Mike Ford, UCSB's regular Friday starter who was sidelined with the flu.
In 8.2 innings, Martin surrendered two earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight and walking two. Martin out-dueled Irvine's All-American ace Scott Gorgen, who gave up three earned runs in seven innings of work.
For the season, Martin went 6-3 with a 3.82 ERA. The Red Bluff, Calif. native led the Gauchos with 22 appearances - 10 starts and 12 relief showings. He gave up 77 hits, struck out 45, and walked 24 in 77.2 innings.
