Mike Kolbach is the Big West Player of the Week, the conference anounced today. The Anaheim native is the second Gaucho this season to earn the award (Jeff Bannon). In his second season as a Gaucho, Kolbach transferred from Texas after playing two years for the Longhorns.
In UCSB's three-game conference series at Sacramento State over the weekend, Kolbach went a combined 9-for-14 with four RBI and four runs. In the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, Kolbach went 5-for-5 with three ribbies and three scores. It was the first five-hit game by a Gaucho since 1998. The senior designated hitter won Game 3 for the Gauchos when he laced an RBI single to right to score Ryan Spilborghs in the tenth inning, giving UCSB an 8-7 lead.
Kolbach is hitting .456 since the third week of the season, and his .415 batting average ties him for the team lead. He has tallied seven doubles, 17 RBI and scored 26 runs. His .467 on-base percentage is third on the team.
At 29-11 overall and 4-2 in Big West play, the Gauchos are currently tied for third in the conference. They will host Pacific in a Big West series this weekend.
