SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara baseball head coach Bob Brontsema has been named the UCSBgauchos.com/Golden 1 Credit Union Gaucho of the Week after becoming the school's all-time wins leader over the weekend.
Brontsema captured win No. 446 in Sunday's 11-6 victory over the University of San Francisco. The victory allowed Brontsema to pass Al Ferrer for the most wins in school history.
Already the school's record holder in most Division 1 victories and currently holding the most victories among active Big West coaches, Brontsema added another honor to his remarkable career.
In his 17th season as head coach, Brontsema has been a part of Gaucho baseball since 1982 when he was a player. He served as an assistant coach following his playing days and then succeeded Ferrer in the 1994 season. Brontsema has been involved in over 60 percent of all of UCSB's victories.
"This is meaningful for me because of the quality of the program over the years," Brontsema said following Sunday's win. "When I was an assistant coach and I worked for Al Ferrer and I know the quality of the job he did, so in that respect this is meaningful. It's a combination of the assistant coaches and all the players that makes this possible."
