SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior right fielder Matt Wilkerson was selected Big West Player of the Week after leading UC Santa Barbara to a perfect 4-0 record last week.
Wilkerson led the Gauchos to a Monday afternoon win over Stony Brook, and then a three-game weekend sweep of visiting Oral Roberts, an NCAA Tournament team in 2004. The Rancho Santa Margarita native hit in all four games, going 6-for-16, .375, over that span. In addition, Wilkerson belted three home runs, had one double, four runs scored and five RBI in the four games. The three home runs gives him a team-leading six on the season, and he has now moved into third on UCSB's all-time career list with 35. Wilkerson has also taken-over the Big West Conference lead with 28 RBI on the season.
Finally, with his solid performance last week, Wilkerson is now batting .327 on the season, a figure that is at its highest point since early in February.
The Gauchos enter the week with a 14-11 overall record. UCSB travels to Cal Poly for a non-conference game tonight against the Mustangs, then it opens Big West play with a three-game home series against Pacific beginning on Friday.
