UC Santa Barbara centerfielder Jared Schumaker has been named Big West Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
Schumaker, a sophomore from Laguna Niguel helped the Gauchos to a 3-2 record last week, including a win at Long Beach State Sunday in which he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs. Saturday vs. Long Beach, he had a run-scoring triple in the 12th inning to put the Gauchos ahead 10-9. Thursday vs. Columbia he posted four hits, including two doubles and a triple, and scored three times. On the week, Schumaker hit .526 and slugged .947. he had six extra-base hits, four RBI and scored seven runs.
The Gaucho leadoff man goes by the nickname "Skip". He transferred to UCSB two years ago from Loyola Marymount, but redshirted last season due to a shoulder injury. He is the third Gaucho to earn Big West weekly honors this season (Bannon, Ogle).
