March 8, 2005
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
After being swept for the second consecutive series, the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (8-9), led by streaking third baseman David Figoni, will face Cal Poly (13-9) in a non-conference match-up in San Luis Obispo Wednesday night. The Gauchos will send right-hander Loren Fraser (1-2, 3.00 ERA) to the mound to stop the current three-game slide.
Leading the Santa Barbara attack is Figoni, a senior, who is currently pacing the team in hits (24), home runs (3), runs scored (16) and total bases (35). He is also riding a 12 game hitting streak into Wednesday's game at Baggett Stadium. Freshman designated hitter Matt Aidem is leading the team in batting average going 12-for-32 (.375) for the season. With his second round-tripper of the season on Sunday against Washington, senior right fielder Matt Wilkerson climbed to number five all-time on the UCSB career home run list with 31. Wilkerson is currently tied with fellow Gaucho standout Jeff Bannon who is currently playing in the Cincinnati Reds organization.
Cal Poly, which concluded its first sweep of Fresno State in program history last weekend, returns home to host 20 of its final 34 games. The Mustangs are led by outfielder Matt Cooper who leads the team with a .355 batting average, 27 hits, 17 runs scored, four home runs and 46 total bases. First baseman Bret Burglund leads Cal Poly with 17 RBI.
UCSB and Cal Poly have already faced-off once this season with the Gauchos pulling out an 11-8 win in a near four-hour affair on March 1. Santa Barbara faces Cal Poly once more in a non-conference match-up on March 22 in San Luis Obispo. The regular Big West showdown between the Gauchos and the Mustangs is scheduled for the weekend of April 22-24 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
After the lone game at Cal Poly, UCSB returns home this weekend to host Loyola Marymount (4-8). The Lions travel to fellow Big West member Long Beach State for one game before heading up to Santa Barbara for a three-game series slated to begin Friday at 2:00 pm. The games on Saturday and Sunday are scheduled for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
