Baseball Has Waves Crash Over Them

Feb. 25, 2000

UC Santa Barbara was defeated in game one of a three-game series against Pepperdine, 17-9. Both starters were not around for decisions, as Matt Wersel picked up his third win on the season for Pepperdine, and Jeremy Sugarman pitched well in relief, but earned his first loss on the season. The Gauchos drop to 7-5, and the Pepperdine Waves improve to 6-7.

Both teams came out of the chute swinging their bats. The Gauchos put five runs on the board in the first, but Pepperdine was able to retaliate in their half of the second with seven runs. In the bottom half of the second, the Gaucho tied the score at seven. The Gauchos only managed two more runs in the fourth, while the Waves put up six in the sixth and three more in the seventh for the final, 17-9.

Both teams combined for 32 hits on the day. Gauchos with multi-hit games were Chris Crawley (two), Chad Peshke (three), Mike Kolbach (three) and Jeff Bannon (two including his first home run of the season). Dan Kemper, and Donovan Warrecker each added a hit for the Gauchos.

Rylie Ogle started for the Gauchos, but only lasted 1.1 innings. Pitching in relief for the Gauchos were Sugarman, Bing Cain, Russell Wirth and Joe Isaacson.

The Gauchos will travel to Malibu tomorrow to face the Pepperdine Waves for a noon game, and then come back to Santa Barbara for the finale on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
