Baseball Battles Santa Clara In Three-Game Home Series

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The Gauchos open a three-game series with the Santa Clara Broncos at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on Friday at 2:00 p.m. Junior right hander Matt Vasquez makes his fourth start of the season.

In 2002, the Broncos went 25-30 overall and 15-14 in the West Coast Conference. First year head coach Mark O' Brien pilots a Santa Clara squad that comes into the series with Santa Barbara with a 5-3 road record and an overall record of 6-6. The Broncos dropped two of three games at San Diego State this past weekend. Their only win in the San Diego State series came on Saturday, as they defeated the Aztecs, 9-6.

The Broncos offense is led by A.J. La Barbara and Jason Matteucci. LaBarbara leads the team in hits (16), RBI (10) and runs scored (9). Matteucci is htting a steady .312 clip and leads the Broncos in doubles (4) and total bases (22).

On the hill Santa Clara is led by starter Matt Travis and bullpen specialist Patrick Overholt. Travis has a record of 1-1 and an ERA of 2.16 in four starts this season. He's also tallied 17 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched. Overholt is the core of the Bronco bullpen, carrying a 2-0 record and 0.00 ERA. Overholt also tallied 14 strikeouts of his own in just 13 and one-third innings pitched.

UCSB leads Santa Clara, 35-33 in head-to-head competition. The two teams met in a three-game series in Santa Clara in 2002. The Broncos out hit the Gauchos 17 to 7, defeating UCSB in the first game of the series, 12-6. However, UC Santa Barbara's pitching staff allowed only three more runs in the next two games combined, outscoring the Broncos, 18-3 and out hitting Santa Clara, 25 to 9. The Gauchos defeated Santa Clara in games two and three, 12-2 and 6-1.

After Friday's contest, the two teams battle again on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
