Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara baseball team will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak when they face the USC Trojans on Tuesday, February 4. The game will be played on campus at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium at 2:00 PM. This matchup will be the season opener for the Trojans. The Gauchos are 1-2 after losing their weekend series to San Diego State.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Steven Morlock will take the mound for Santa Barbara. The Ross, CA native will be making his first collegiate start. USC will be pitching junior Frazer Dizard. The left-hander was forced to red-shirt last season after throwing six innings for the Trojans.
Junior Chad Ziemendorf led all Gaucho hitters over the weekend series with four hits. The starting catcher also drew two walks, batting 4-8 on the series, a team best .500 batting average. Junior designated hitter Taylor Vogt was one of three Gauchos to hit a home run against San Diego State. Junior transfer Greg Powers and freshman Matt Emerick also went yard.
USC ended last season 37-24, champions of the Pac-10. It was the second consecutive crown for the Trojans and head coach Mike Gillespie (645-356-2, 16th year). Key players for USC include junior 3B Michael Moon (.336 AVG, 8 HR, 60 RBI) and sophomore DH Joey Metropoulos (.352, 13, 65).
Santa Barbara and USC will continue this two game series on April 22 in Los Angeles. That game, at Dedeaux Field, will start at 5:00 PM. After this game, UCSB heads to Malibu, CA for the "Battle at the Beach" tournament. The Gauchos will be facing Houston on Friday, University of Washington on Saturday, and tournament host Pepperdine on Sunday.
