Santa Barbara, Calif. - A talented alumni squad defeated the 2003 baseball team Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, 13-12. The alumni team featured a starting lineup of seven All-Big West Conference honorees including a handful of 2001 graduates and most recent graduates Ryan Spilborghs and Dave Licht. The alumni tallied 13 runs on 11 hits, while the Gauchos recorded 12 runs on eight hits.
The alumni struck first as Skip Schumaker sent Michael Martin's first pitch of the game over the right field fence. They added six more runs in the first inning capped off by a two-run home run by Jeff Bannon and a two-run single by Tyler Von Schell. The Gauchos manufactured two runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score, 7-2. Chris Malec doubled to left, scoring Nate Sutton from second. After advancing to third on a ground ball, Malec later scored on an errant throw from catcher Donavon Warrecker to the pitcher.
The Gauchos struck again in the sixth inning scoring four more runs. Brian Adams led off the inning with a single into left field. UCSB then loaded the bases on back-to-back walks issued to Matt Stevens and Chris Malec. With the bases loaded, former Gaucho pitcher James Garcia unleashed a wild pitch allowing Adams to score and advancing Stevens and Malec to second and third. Moments later, freshman Chris Caraballo cleared the bases with a two-run double. Then, pinch hitter Nic Rodriguez singled in Caraballo from second, pulling the Gauchos within one run, 11-12.
The alumni added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a two out double. In the bottom of the frame, Adams mashed a home run to make the score, 12-13. The Gauchos continued to threaten putting runners on first and second with only one out. However, sophomore Matt Wilkerson grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Jared Edrosolan shut down the alumni in the eighth, but the Gauchos mustered no comeback in the bottom of the inning securing the alumni's victory.
UCSB will open its 2003 season at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium Friday, January 31, in the first game of a three-game series against new head coach Tony Gwynn and the San Diego State Aztecs. Friday's game will begin at 2:00pm and both Saturday's and Sunday's games will begin at 1:00pm. Come to the field and support this years Gaucho baseball team.
