SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield scored in all but two innings on Tuesday while hitting five home runs to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 13-10, in the Gauchos' final home game of the season.
UCSB falls to 21-30 on the season while Cal State Bakersfield improves to 24-28. The Gauchos have lost 11 of their past 13 games.
UC Santa Barbara starting pitcher Nick Capito started what turned out to be a trend for the Gauchos in the first inning by surrendering a two-out home run to Martin Medina. Mick Gaston homered with one out in the third and then pinch-hitter Jason Kudlock hit a three-run homer later in the frame.
UCSB later tied the game, 8-8, in the fourth inning with four more runs. Edelstein scored on Doug Hansen's groundout and then a throwing error by CSUB's Garrett Branske kept the inning alive.
Sean Williams had a two-out RBI single before Valaika hit a two-run triple.
Yet, Bakersfield struck for three more in the fifth and a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, handing UCSB its fifth straight loss.
