San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos ended their season on a sour note with a 4-2 loss to the Cal Poly Mustangs. The loss drops the Gauchos virtually out of a post season birth as their record falls to 28-25 and 18-12 in the Big West. With the win, the Mustangs improve to 32-24 and also have an 18-12 record in the Big West.
Mustang starting pitcher, Jared Blasdell held the Gauchos to two hits and two unearned runs through eight innings. One of those hits was a home run that came off the bat of first baseman Mike Kolbach, his first on the season. The other run came on a sacrifice bunt by Jeff Carter that scored R.J. Smith who reached on an error by shortstop Brian Oxley earlier in the inning.
The Gauchos managed to put a rally together in the ninth. With the bases loaded and one out, Carter lined out to the shortstop. On the play, Chris Crawley who was pinch running for Donovan Warrecker, got too far off of third base and was doubled up for the third out.
Phil Galer started for the Gauchos and went four innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. He took the loss and falls to 1-3 on the season. Jeremy Sugarman came in relief and threw the next 3.1 innings of three hit and one run ball. Joe Isaacson and Peter Dyball pitched the remaining two outs.
Blasdell earned the win to improve to 7-2. Tanner Trosper pitched the final inning for the Mustangs to record his fourth save.
