DAVIS, Calif. - Michael Hernandez pounded a three-run homer to left field in the second inning and relief pitcher Eddie Gamboa threw 4.1 shutout innings to help UC Davis defeat UC Santa Barbara 8-6 and avoid the series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium in Davis, Calif..

The loss drops the Gauchos to 23-27 overall. The Aggies improve to 22-30.

It was the second straight game in which Hernandez had hit a home run. On Saturday, he belted a grand slam in a UCSB win.

Gamboa relieved starting pitcher Bryan Evans with two outs in the fifth inning and finished the final 4.1 innings without allowing a run and giving up only five hits while striking out a game-high three batters. Gamboa's first out of the game was a pick off of a Gauchos runner at first base, which ended the fifth inning.

UCSB had several players who posted solid offensive efforts. Center fielder Chris Fox went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 22 consecutive games. First baseman Robbie Blauer, who opened the season with a 24 game hitting streak, went 2-for-5 to lengthen his current streak to 19 in a row. Right fielder Mario Lewis went 3-for-4 and second baseman Patrick Rose collected three hits and two RBI in theloss.

Michael Jacobellis was one of only three Aggies with multiple hits in the game as he was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Brandon Oliver was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Jacob Jefferies extended his season-best hit streak to 11 games as he drove home a run while also scoring.

Evan Hudson also extended his hitting streak as his double in the second inning gives him a hit in a team-best 16 games.

Gaucho starter Jeff Braun gave up six earned runs off nine hits in three innings of work and was credited with the loss. Matt Wade and Brian Tracy allowed only two hits and one unearned run in five combined innings.

Gauchos second baseman Rose was only a home run shy of the cycle as he had three hits, two RBIs, a double and a triple. Mario Lewis also had three hits, an RBi and a run scored for UC Santa Barbara.

The Aggies jumped out to a five-run lead after two innings - four of which came in the second frame. The single run in the first inning came off a solo shot from Oliver that found its way over the left field wall. The four-run second was highlighted by Hernandez's three-run blast that cleared the left field wall in almost the same spot that his grand slam did yesterday. An RBI single from Jacobellis capped the second.

UCSB scored all six of its runs in a three inning span. They scored a single run in the second inning, two in the third and three in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-6.

Oliver would score in the sixth inning on a balk to give the Aggies a two-run lead and the eventual 8-6 victory.

The Gauchos will play their final four games at home. UCSB will host USC on Wednesday in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium
