San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Gauchos knows what has to be done, they have to win! The Gauchos did just that in game two of a three game Big West Conference finale against the Cal Poly Mustangs, 7-6. With the win, the Gauchos improve to 28-24 overall and 18-11 in the Big West. With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 31-24 overall and 17-12 in the Big West.
The game went back and forth the entire time. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first. The Gauchos jumped right back with two runs in the second on an error by the first baseman, Steve Wood.
The Mustangs bounced right back in the third with one more run. Again, the Gauchos scored one run in the third when Jeff Bannon smacked his eleventh home run on the season.
The scoring was not over. The Mustangs took a 5-3 lead after scoring one more run in the third on an RBI single by Kyle Albright. The Gauchos scored the next three runs, one in the fourth, fifth and sixth to take the lead for the first time, 6-5.
The Mustangs tied the game in the sixth on a home run off the center field scoreboard by Steve Wood. This would be the last run that the Mustangs would score.
The Gauchos managed to break the tie in the eighth. With one out, Jeff Carter walked and advanced to third after Mike Kolbach hit a ball that was uunsuccessfully fielded by the first base man. This allowed Kolbach to also go to second. Chad Peshke was then intentionally walked to load the bases for clean-up hitter Dave Molidor. Molidor hit the third pitch to left field for his first hit on the day and drove in Carter. This gave the Gauchos the go-ahead run for good..
Joe Isaacson threw five innings in relief for the Gauchos to earn his fifth win and improve his record to 5-0. Jim Bullard pitched the final four outs to earn his sixth save on the season. Nathan Choate took the loss in relief to fall to 2-1.
The final game of the series will take place tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
