LOS ANGELES - UC Santa Barbara hung with No. 10 UCLA for much of Tuesday's game, but the Bruins scored four runs in the seventh inning to secure a 6-2 win at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Gaucho starter Nick Capito and reliever Greg Davis were solid vs. the Bruins, allowing just one earned run on four hits in 5.2 combined innings, however UCLA scored two runs against both Connor Whalen and Nick Loredo.
UCSB falls to 21-26 overall, losing for the seventh time in its past nine games. UCLA improves to 38-11 overall.
The Gauchos had chances to push across runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but were unable to score. UCSB loaded the bases with two out in the fourth but Ryan Tregoning struck out swinging and in the sixth Matt Valaika grounded into a fielder's choice to end a first-and-third threat.
Gunnar Terhune, Sean Williams, Trevor Whyte, Tregoning and Lance Roenicke all had hits for the Gauchos, with Whyte's and Roenicke's going for doubles. The Gauchos scored both of their runs in the eighth inning when Roenicke led off with a double and Williams singled him home. Whyte followed with a double to score Williams.
Unfortunately UCLA had just scored four times in the seventh on an infield single, a two-run single up the middle and a two-out single to left.
That was enough to do in UCSB in the Gauchos' second-to-last Tuesday game of the season.
